About Martell
The Martell cognac house was founded in 1715 by smuggler Jean Martell from the island of Jersey. A marriage to a native Frenchwoman, and after her death, a second marriage to a member of a family of cognac merchants, allowed him to quickly achieve success in the industry. As early as 1720, shipments began to Great Britain and Northern Europe, and by 1721, Martell cognac exports reached 200,000 liters. After the founder's death in 1753, the thriving Martell company passed to his widow Rachel and his sons Frederick and Jean. Bottling of cognac began in 1797. Martell was one of the first to dominate the American and Russian markets, in 1784 and 1803, respectively, and in the mid-19th century, Martell began exporting cognac to Australia, China, and Japan. In 1807, the company "J & F Martell" was registered. In 1819, Theodore Martell created the elite cognac "Martell Extra." In 1874, to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the House of Martell, cognac "Martell VSOP" was released. In 1992, "Martell L'Or" was introduced. In 1995, to mark the 280th anniversary of the House of Martell, cognac "Martell Creation" was released. In 1997, following the handover of Hong Kong to China, Martell released a limited edition of 1,997 bottles of "Martell L'Art" cognac. In 2002, Martell became part of the Pernod Ricard Group. In 2006, Martell joined the Comité Colbert, a French association founded in 1954 that comprises 70 companies involved in the production of luxury goods. Martell currently sells around 22 million bottles of cognac per year. Today, the house is run by Patrick Firino-Martell, the eighth generation of the family. Martell Cognac is produced primarily from Ugni Blanc grapes, with a small amount of Colombard and Folle Blanche. The company owns 14 distilleries, one of which is considered the largest and best in terms of technical equipment in the Charente region. Martell Cognac is aged primarily in Troncais oak barrels. All Martell Cognacs are smooth and have a fruity bouquet thanks to the use of eaux-de-vie from a small region north of Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, the so-called Borderies. Cellar master Patrick Rageno represents the ninth generation of his family to work for Martell. A stock of the finest eaux-de-vie, the oldest of which was distilled in 1830, is kept in two special warehouses, "Paradise" and "Purgatory." The best Martell cognacs are sold in luxury decanters decorated with 24-carat gold.
