Organic Earl Grey
This noble black tea classic delights with a hint of lemony freshness, which it owes to the organically cultivated bergamot.
Earl Grey is a tea blend that originally consisted exclusively of Chinese teas and was lightly flavored with the fine, fragrant, bitter oil of bergamot.
The tea was named after Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey (1764–1845). In 1833, as British Prime Minister, he abolished the East India Company's price monopoly in the tea trade with China. However, the tea is not actually an invention of Earl Grey. Legend has it that a storm during the crossing caused the cargo to be tossed about, causing bergamot oil to spill onto the tea bales. When the ship arrived in London, Lord Grey had the damage shown to him and decided to taste the tea first before deciding whether the cargo should be destroyed. The tea was so well received by friends and acquaintances, however, that the Earl decided to market the "flavored" tea.
Today, Earl Grey is no longer only blended from Chinese teas, but also from Indian varieties and goes perfectly with slightly salty dishes and small snacks.
