Long pepper is a climbing plant with roots emerging from its stem nodes. Its distribution extends from northern India to Indonesia. The fruit clusters, reminiscent of willow, hazel, or birch catkins, are harvested and dried at various stages of ripeness, then used primarily as a spice in India but also as a medicinal herb.

Long peppercorn is considered the first peppercorn variety to reach Europe in ancient times and was known long before the black pepper commonly used today. It is much more versatile and, in the longer version, hotter than black peppercorn, but can essentially be used in the same way.

The longer version of long peppercorn is hot and warm, with sweet and earthy overtones. It exudes a cinnamon aroma reminiscent of the Christmas season. Long peppercorns are excellent for grinding in a mortar and pestle, or they can be broken and chopped into pieces and placed in a spice grinder. In sauces, broths, or marinades, it can also be used whole to release its slightly sweet, floral scent. But be careful, as the spiciness increases with cooking time.
