Manzoni alcohol-free aperitif

What began in 1933 with the Schmidiger couple and a simple beverage bottling plant in the old spa house in Gontenbad is now a company with seventy employees.

Water has always been one of Appenzellerland's most valuable resources. The numerous springs and streams testify to this abundance. Many place names such as Wasserauen, Weissbad, Jakobsbad, and Gontenbad reflect the region's spa tradition.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the spring-rich Alpine foothills became known far beyond the Swiss border for their bathing and whey cures. Thanks to the precious mineral water that emerges on the edge of the Gonten high moor, the Gontenbad also wrote a chapter in Appenzell's spa history. The small hamlet near Appenzell was first mentioned as a spa in 1576. Around 1740, the "New Appenzell Chronicle" described it as the most famous spa in Innerrhoden. After a decline in tourism, Josef and Hedwig Schmidiger began bottling mineral water from their own spring around 1930. At a time when drinking table water was still a rare luxury, the grandparents of the current company owner proved to be pioneers. They developed recipes for lemonades and liqueurs, with which they established themselves on the regional market. Thirty years later, their daughter Rita and her husband Josef Manser took over the Gontenbad mineral spring.
