Weather station on the Säntis

The first weather observer on the Säntis was Johann Josef Koller von Gonten, who at that time still worked in the improvised weather station in the mountain inn. Shortly thereafter, a new weather station was built on the Säntis summit. From the establishment of the weather station in 1879 until the construction of the Säntis cable car in 1935, the Säntis was Europe's highest weather observation station. The weather observers lived in isolation on the 2,504-meter-high mountain 365 days a year and bore a difficult lot. The Säntis experienced its darkest hour in February 1922: The suspected murderer Gregor Kreuzpointner climbed the Säntis despite the extreme danger of avalanches and surprised the Haas weather observer couple. On the fifth day, the uninvited guest shot Lena and Heinrich Haas, cut the telegraph line, and fled on skis over the Meglisalp into the valley. When no weather reports reached the valley for four days, two people carrying the Säntis mountain set out and discovered the two bodies. The events surrounding the double murder still affect locals today.
