Story

Gret Zellweger

Gret Zellweger, born in Teufen in 1945, now earns her living as an artist after giving up her job at the Säntisbahn cable car in 1980 and turning her hobby into a career. She paints pictures, creates woodcuts, calligraphy, and metal objects. She arranges hand-carved stencils of animals, mountains, and people on colored backgrounds, combining them to create traditional and mountain sports scenes, and skillfully plays with contrasts. She is as much a part of the Alpstein as the jagged peaks of the Kreuzberge mountains or the more than 20 mountain inns. As an avid mountaineer, she can be found in the Alpstein both summer and winter. She has not only conquered peaks and left kilometers of tracks in the snow; Gret has also left her artistic mark on the mountains. Her regular visits to the Alpstein mountain innkeepers have led to a visible connection to the hosts in the Alpstein. Many mountain inns bear her signature, on the Tafern or on their menus and drinks lists. Gret Zellweger has also been actively involved in public affairs for years. In 1994, she was the first woman ever to be elected president of the Teufen Trade Association. Since then, she has been the organizer—and, as it were, the lead organizer—of the annual exhibition of apprentices' leisure work from both Appenzell districts. From 1996 to 2009, she served as an independent member of the Ausserrhoden Cantonal Council, leaving her political mark as well.
